From fashion designer to techpreneur – one story for transformation
Our story…
My name is Vesselena. After graduating from university, I launched my fashion brand, “Attitude157,” in 2015, which I ran for eight years. During this time, I encountered a major industry challenge: high return rates due to incorrect sizing. This issue not only strained finances but also hindered customer satisfaction. Determined to find a solution, I set out in 2019 to leverage technology to reduce returns and enhance profitability.
A Turning Point
Joining the pre-seed startup accelerator, Founders’ Institute, was a pivotal moment. There, I met Alex, a computer engineer and AI assistant professor. Together, we envisioned a solution: size recommendation algorithms integrated into a B2C fashion marketplace. This platform would offer a personalized catalog of clothing tailored to women’s body measurements and shapes, addressing a common pain point. Thirteen fashion brands supported our idea, but we faced a significant funding challenge. Larger investors required proof of concept from smaller investors, making it difficult to secure the necessary financial backing. Despite our efforts, we couldn’t obtain the funding needed to fully realize our concept.
Pivoting to a SaaS Solution
In 2022, financial constraints forced me to close both my fashion brand and the marketplace project. However, Alex and I remained committed to our vision to build a tool that gives accurate size recommendations. We pivoted to develop our algorithms as a SaaS solution for Shopify. Balancing full-time jobs, we dedicated our free time to perfecting the algorithms, ensuring they accurately reflected the true fit of various clothing items.
The Birth of Size Sense
Our perseverance paid off. We successfully developed and tested our size recommendation algorithms for womenswear. We created a proprietary algorithms that assists customers in discovering their ideal size, just as a tailor would. Drawing on my eight years of experience in patternmaking, during which I created hundreds of patterns for both production and bespoke orders, I used my expertise and embedded it into the algorithms which Alex helped me translate into code. Intuitive in its logic, the algorithms seamlessly match customer body measurements and shapes to specific clothing measurements. Just as I did when a customer walked into my studio requesting a custom-made piece, considering not only her body measurements and shape but also fabric elasticity, clothing design, and customer preferences. Unlike other competitors, Size Sense fully takes all of these into account. The end product is a precise one-to-one alignment between product and customer.
The Synergy of Fashion and AI
The journey from fashion designer to techpreneur has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. By combining my passion for fashion with Alex’s expertise in AI, we have created a tool that addresses a critical industry issue. Our algorithms are now available as a SaaS solution on the Shopify app store, accessible to every womenswear brand. Size Sense promises to revolutionize the fashion industry by providing the most accurate size recommendations, reducing returns, and boosting customer satisfaction.

Vessie has extensive expertise in fashion design, apparel technology and ecommerce. She studied fashion design and technology in Kent State University in Ohio, US and also Escuela de Artes y Deseno, Burgos, Spain. She is the owner of the Attitude 157 fashion brand and the ideologist behind SizeSense.
Alex is one of SizeSense’s cofounders. A mechanical engineer fascinated by intelligent systems with a Ph.D. in Machine Learning for industrial applications, and an eMBA degree. Alex has a lot of entrepreneurial experience, and a deep knowledge in product design, systems modelling and prototyping, but also marketing and finance.
Xander is a content creator with extensive experience in the beauty and personal care industry. He has helped numerous brands bridge the gap between their services (or products) and consumers in an accessible, entertaining, and above all informative way.
